Inmates Build PCs and Hack Prison from Within

Five inmates at Marion Correctional Institution built two computers from spare parts and used them to hack into the prison’s network.

MCI admins grew suspicious when a user account belonging to a prison contractor was exceeding daily traffic quotas on the employee’s off days. They traced the traffic back to a computer with a name that didn’t fit the prison’s scheme.

The computers were found hidden in the ceiling of a closet. The prisoner’s had used spare parts from the prison’s recycling program to build the PCs. They used software and hacking tools to crack into the network, where they collected personal data on inmates, applied for credit cards in their names, and issued passes for other inmates.
