OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research and development company and creators of conversational chatbot model ChatGPT, have launched an API for both ChatGPT and automatic speech recognition system Whisper.
Models for both ChatGPT and Whisper are now available on OpenAI’s API, giving developers access to language and speech-to-text capabilities. According to OpenAI, the company has achieved a 90% cost reduction for ChatGPT since December through a “series of system-wide optimizations.” .
Developers can now use the company’s open-source Whisper large-v2 model in the API with faster and more cost-effective results, the company says, adding that ChatGPT API users can expect continuous model improvements and the option to choose dedicated capacity for deeper control over the models.
“We’ve also listened closely to feedback from our developers and refined our API terms of service to better meet their needs,” the company says in a blog post, which included examples of early uses of the APIs.
Those early users include Snapchat, which this week introduced My AI for Snapchat+. The experimental feature is running on ChatGPT API, giving users a friendly, customizable chatbot in Snapchat.
In the IT industry, companies such as ConnectWise and Atera have launched their own ChatGPT integrations designed to automate manual processes and help IT professionals write scripts.
With Microsoft investing heavily in OpenAI, the company is also launching integrations throughout its product portfolio, including Bing, Azure, Teams and more. In addition, the Microsoft-owned GitHub is launching Copilot for Business, an at-scale AI developer tool that features a more advanced OpenAI model and new capabilities.
According to OpenAI, other early users include:
- Quizlet, a global learning platform that is leveraging GPT-3 across multiple use cases, including vocabulary learning and practice tests. With the launch of the ChatGPT API, Quizlet is introducing Q-Chat, an AI tutor that engages with students with adaptive questions based on relevant study materials.
- Grocery delivery service Instacart, which is using the ChatGPT API along with its own AI and product data to help customers discover ideas for open-ended shopping goals. Customers can ask things such as how to make certain meals or for healthy food options. This capability will launch later this year.
- Shopify’s consumer app Shop is using ChatGPT’s API to power Shop’s new shopping assistant to make personalized recommendations based on shoppers’ requests. The shopping assistant will streamline in-app shopping by scanning products to quickly find what buyers are looking for.
- AI-powered language learning app Speak is also using the Whisper API to power a new AI-speaking companion product and bring it to the rest of the globe.
Other OpenAI updates
According to OpenAI, the ChatGPT model family released as part of the API, gpt-3.5-turbo, is the same model used in the ChatGPT product. However, it is 10 times cheaper than existing GPT-3.5 models, the company says.
“Developers who use the gpt-3.5-turbo model will always get our recommended stable model, while still having the flexibility to opt for a specific model version,” the company says, adding that it is also releasing gpt-3.5-turbo-0301, which will be supported through at least June 1. OpenAI will update gpt-3.5-turbo to a new stable release in April.
OpenAI is also releasing new dedicated instances for users who want deeper control over the specific model version and system performance.
In the blog, OpenAI admits that the past two months of ChatGPT testing has not met the company’s expectations of uptime, and the company says its engineering team’s top priority is stability of production use cases.
“We believe that AI can provide incredible opportunities and economic empowerment to everyone, and the best way to achieve that is to allow everyone to build with it,” the company says. “We hope that the changes we announced today will lead to numerous applications that everyone can benefit from. Start building next-generation apps powered by ChatGPT & Whisper.”
