Hackers Using Fake Cellphone Towers to Spread Malware
A group of Chinese hackers have taken to using rogue cell phone towers to distribute Android banking malware via spoofed SMS messages.
This type of attack involves number spoofing attacks that send fake messages to trick mobile users into downloading a malware app.
The hackers have used fake base transceiver stations (BTS towers) to send out the messages. These devices are typically installed in cell phone towers. The message claims to come from telecom service providers and contains convincing text with a link to download the malware.
Once installed, the malware then sends similar messages to contacts on the corrupted phone.
