Videoconferencing apps like Zoom, Google Meet, WebEx, GoToMeeting and many others have not only been used to help businesses continue operations remotely, but also to help us connect with one another personally.
They’re also allowing couples who were forced to postpone or cancel their wedding due to COVID-19 to get married virtually.
However, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is taking it a step further and allowing New Yorkers to get their marriage license remotely.
NEW: I am issuing an Executive Order allowing New Yorkers to obtain a marriage license remotely and allowing clerks to perform ceremonies via video conference.

According to a statement from Cuomo’s office, the executive order allows clerks to perform ceremonies via videoconferencing, which had previously been banned. This comes as most marriage buerueas in the state have been closed for several weeks due to the pandemic-induced lockdown.
Other areas in the U.S. have passed similar measures, like Colorado and Ohio’s Cuyahoga County, allowing couples to apply for marriage licenses remotely.
The news came Saturday during Cuomo’s now routine press briefings on the state’s response to the pandemic. New York has been the hardest hit state in the U.S. by far, reporting more than 242,000 cases and nearly 14,000 deaths Monday morning.
