Microsoft is releasing Defender for Individuals, a new online security application for subscribers of Microsoft 365 Personal and Family, bringing enterprise security features to consumers.

According to Microsoft, Defender for Individuals leverage the same security tools used by enterprises for Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, bringing new security offerings to the company’s Defender solutions family and building onto the protection within Windows Security.

For families using multiple devices and platforms, Defender for Individuals extends protection from Windows devices to iOS, macOS and Android devices for cross-platform malware detection. The company bills this new product as a solution to the growing number of connected devices—and thus security threats—being used by families.

The solution also includes a centralized dashboard to manage security protections for everyone in the family, and Defender for Individuals will also provide visibility into existing antivirus protections from providers such as Norton or McAfee.

Microsoft Defender for Individuals provides instant security alerts, resolution strategies and expert tips to help consumers keep data and devices secure, according to the company.

Vassu Jakkal, the company’s corporate vice president of security, compliance, identity and management, wrote in a blog that the expansion of the Defender family to individuals and families is natural progression of Microsoft’s journey as a security company.

Jakkal writes that ransomware threats are extending beyond large, corporate enterprises to go after small businesses and families. As these attacks become more sophisticated, enterprise-grade security should be available to everyone.

“That is why it is so important for us to protect your entire digital life, whether you are at home or work—threats don’t end when you walk out of the office or close your work laptop for the day,” Jakkal writes. “We need solutions that help keep you and your family secure in how you work, play, and live.”
