Hybrid work can lead to burnout, but employees are adapting
While employees generally like hybrid work, Microsoft’s research shows that hybrid work models can result in burnout.
According to the Work Trends Index, Microsoft has recorded a 252% increase in weekly time spent in meetings for Average Teams users since February 2020, as well as a 32% increase in chats sent per person since March 2020.
Now that we’re more than two years into distributed work, employees are actively working to reduce their level of burnout, as Microsoft’s report finds the number of overlapping meetings per person per month decrease by 44% between March 2021 and last month.
In addition, there are fewer meetings scheduled at noon, suggesting that people are making it a point to take a midday break. Data suggests employees are also taking more vacations, with out-of-office time blocks on calendars increasing by 10% in the past year.
The research also shows that meetings are getting shorter, and are starting later on Mondays and are ending earlier on Fridays.
