As data becomes increasingly important for enterprises, CompTIA has announced the creation of new certifications and learning resources for data professionals.
CompTIA, which already offers industry-recognized certifications such as Network+, Security+, Cloud+ and a host of other IT certifications, will launch Data+ this quarter. The organization calls the new certification an “early-career data analytics certification” for professionals that develop and promote data-driven business decision-making.
The organization also plans to release other certifications and learning materials for data professionals in 2023, with resources available for all career levels, including (ranked in order from early career to advanced) CompTIA Data Foundations, CompTIA Data+, CompTIA DataSys+ and CompTIA DataSci+.
This new effort to serve the data scientist community is in response to a strong demand for data analysts, data mining specialists, data engineers and data scientists, as there were 193,000 job postings for those roles over the last 12 months, according to CompTIA. More than half of those positions require less than five years of experience.
Over that same timeframe, there have been more than 1 million job postings seeking candidates with skills in data analysis, data mining or data visualization.
Despite that demand for data professionals, CompTIA research has found that just one in four companies report meeting expectations of its utilization of data, suggesting the need for widespread improvement in data science.
The company’s recent Data Management and Analysis Trends report found that organizations are facing challenges with timely data analysis, working across multiple data sets and types, and closing the data-related skills gaps among staff.
Todd Thibodeaux, president and CEO of CompTIA, said in a statement that companies are learning that they need to develop data teams with diverse and distinct skills at all levels.
“Organizations that think strategically about overcoming data silos and developing a data-first mindset among staff will be positioned to unlock the full potential of data,” Thibodeaux added.
