Microsoft is planning to add real-time AI-based noise suppression that can automatically remove unwanted noise during video meetings on Microsoft Teams.

According to Microsoft’s 365 roadmap, the feature will automatically remove unwelcome background noise during meetings by analyzing a person’s audio feed and using specially trained deep neural networks to filter out unwanted noise like a clicking pen, loud motorcycle driving by or a desk fan. Only the wanted speech would be retained.

With many workers still operating out of their home, noise suppression technology like this will help keep calls on topic and limit distractions.

This updates the platform’s existing noise suppression technology, but users will now have the ability to control just how much noise suppression they want. A new “high” setting will suppress more background noise than before, according to the company.

The feature is currently in development and is expected to be released to all users sometime in November.

Microsoft first announced real-time noise suppression in March.

Most of Microsoft’s competitors also have some form of noise suppression technology, including Zoom, Webex, and Google Meet.

Last month during the company’s annual Ignite event, Microsoft announced several new features and devices for its flagship unified communications and collaboration app.

New features in Teams include new Together mode scenes and custom layouts that make presented content more engaging, like bringing the presenter’s video feed into the foreground of the shared content screen.

Also new are features and devices in Microsoft Teams Rooms to support health and safety as some employees return to the office, including the Room remote app, Teams casting and deeper integrations with Microsoft’s virtual assistant Cortana.

Microsoft is also bringing well-being insights to teams, including a virtual commute that brings structure to long workdays from home and integrations with wellness apps like Headspace.
