Microsoft to Allow for Multiple Accounts on Teams

The long-requested feature to allow for multiple accounts on Microsoft Teams will be coming to users in December, company says.

Mattermost Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams users next month will finally get a feature many have been asking for: the ability to add multiple accounts to the company’s flagship unified communications platform.

As first reported by OnMSFT.com and ZDNet, the feature will allow Teams users to add additional accounts, change between accounts and organizations and change their profile pictures, according to the Microsoft 365 roadmap.

For users with Standard, Multi-Tenant and Education accounts, this will be available in December, according to the roadmap. The feature was quietly added to the roadmap on Nov. 3 and is slated as “in development.”

The feature works similarly to other apps and services that allow you to sign into multiple accounts and seamlessly switch and forth. For example, Outlook and Google users can toggle between their work and personal accounts.

According to the roadmap, users will have to navigate to Settings to switch accounts.

Currently, users have to sign out of one account to sign into another, which can be cumbersome and a time suck.

There are some workarounds, according to ONMSFT.com:

Sign in with your (other) Teams account on the Microsoft Teams Web App

Create a PWA. In Edge, click the . . . button in the top right corner of the screen. After that, click where it says Apps. You’ll then see the Teams logo, and you’ll want to click Install this site as an app.

In Chrome, click the three downwards facing dots in the top-right corner of the screen. Then, choose More Tools followed by Create Shortcut. Make sure the Open as window checkbox is clicked, and then click Create.

This feature makes sense for many reasons. Our work and personal lives are now one and the same and we’re now finding ourselves tending to both simultaneously.

And, with a bit more time on our hands, we’re picking up side jobs and extra work to make ends meet. Teams is a proven platform that can help with both.

The ability to switch back and forth between work and personal accounts is needed now more than ever.
