Digital signage has grown up. It’s now more powerful and intuitive than when it first came onto the scene. Typically platforms are cloud-based and everything can be accessed through a web browser – i.e. no software to download. There are various roles and permission levels that can allow more people (even students) to be involved in pushing content to the campus displays, while providing each department control over content on screens in their buildings.
Progressive campuses are seeing the benefits of digital signage as their central communication hub, providing a medium for messaging, events and promotions to reach the entire campus. And it’s no longer just basic image and PowerPoint-like slides that are shown on the displays, the integration with dynamic content feeds from outside sources is also becoming more popular. Up-to-the-minute news, weather and social feeds are often streamed across campus and displayed side by side with traditional campus information. Much of this can be automated, meaning less work on the marketing and IT teams who typically are responsible for managing the network. Content layouts can include multiple zones, all displaying unique dynamic content in each zone. This results in a display format that the entire campus finds as an engaging resource for information.
Fairfield University wanted a better way to communicate with their students. They needed a quick, efficient, and attention-grabbing system to reach 4,000+ students, staff and visitors across their 200-acre Connecticut campus. Previously, Fairfield’s method of information distribution was less effective and non-cohesive. With posters being expensive and time-intensive and emails going unread, students required a more effective way to receive information from the university. Some students weren’t receiving the information in a timely fashion, if they received it at all. Compounding the issue, printed materials took up an excess of time and resources, not to mention were counter to the school’s mission to become more environmentally “green.”
