Students everywhere are back in school mode, as are their mobile devices. Whether students are participating in a 1:1 program, BYOD program or simply using mobile technology in the classroom to learn, it is likely that they have access to a mobile device throughout the school day. Having the ability to access different educational applications during the school day not only helps students learn, but can also help to keep them safe in the event of an emergency.
School districts are constantly looking for ways to keep students and school grounds a safe place to learn, and there a many new apps available this school year that will help schools do just that.
Punch Technologies, a mobile software company, will launch its new Punch Alert 4.0 in October, an app consisting of a universal panic button developed for mobile emergency management. The free app uses smart communication technology to inform and notify responders and is available on IOS and Android devices.
Punch Alert 4.0 will also include Punch Alert Local (PAL), which is an opt-in community safety program. Users of PAL can alert 911, emergency responders and other “PALS” in close proximity by pressing the panic button. Punch Alert 4.0 and Punch Alert Local helps users inform others of an emergency quickly and efficiently, which can be especially helpful to students and teachers in the event of an emergency. With nearly every student owning a mobile device, they will now have the power to notify emergency responders at the instant an emergency occurs, all with the single push of a button on their phone.

Another safety app that is now available on the market is SchoolDude’s CrisisManager app. Every school has a crisis management plan, but if it’s in a three-ring binder on a shelf somewhere, it may not be all that easy to access. The free CrisisManager app allows schools to publish their own school safety plan to the app, enabling students and teachers to view the safety plan with ease once they have downloaded CrisisManager.
“With 70% of all of us carrying a smartphone with us, we decided that the smartphone was the best place to disseminate safety information. Whether you are a faculty member, administrator or student, you can download the CrisisManager app and the safety plan for the educational constitution. In the event of a gas leak, intruder or medical emergency, you can take out your phone and hit the corresponding icon and then know exactly what you should do in that safety event and respond proactively,” says Nick Mirisis, director of marketing and business development for SchoolDude.
In K-12 schools especially, safety concerns are always at the forefront of parents’, teachers’ and school administrators’ minds. With these new safety apps available for the fall, students, their family members and school faculty can enter the school year feeling more secure about how to handle an emergency.
