Campus Safety Announces Director of the Year Finalists

Check out this year's outstanding campus public safety, security and emergency management leaders and the effective policies, procedures and technologies they use to protect their organizations.

Klay Peterson

Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police
University of South Carolina Upstate
Spartanburg, S.C.
Notable Achievements:

  • Negotiated inclusion into the Spartanburg county-wide public safety answering point.
  • Department of Public Safety managed the installation of access control systems in 11 campus buildings. The Police Department now has the ability to lock down these buildings in the event of an emergency.
  • Secured funding for the upgrade of the campus fire alarm systems. As the result of the support from many stakeholders across campus, the university now enjoys enhanced response times to fire alarm activations.

Jason Rossi

Director of One Card and Campus Security Systems
University of San Francisco
San Francisco, Calif.
Notable Achievements:

  • Improved visitor management by deploying facial recognition in cameras that scan students’ faces as they enter the dorms, matching them to the residence hall database.
  • Access control upgrades resulted in a 47 percent drop in thefts from buildings in the first year of the upgrade’s implementation.
  • Implemented a virtual escort program to keep students safe while walking home. Implementation freed up campus officers for more foot patrols.

Stan Skipworth

Director of Campus Safety
Claremont University Consortium
Claremont, Calif.
Notable Achievements:

  • Fostered improved relationships with leaders of all seven institutions within the consortium as well as with local law enforcement.
  • Launched a student assistant program to help the department with administrative functions, including vehicle and bike registrations, special event and community outreach support, and safe escorts for students.
  • Became Legislative Activities Chair for the California College & University Police Chiefs Association (CCUPCA) and helped develop public policy and anti-crime measures that were passed by the California legislature and signed into law by the governor.

Lisa Terry

Director of Hospital Police and Transportation

Notable Achievements:

  • A Unified Security and Video System (VICTOR) has been added to one server, providing UNC with the ability to view all of its cameras from multiple sites. With over 2,200 cameras, this ability has helped investigations and improved the overall security of the hospital and its outlying clinics.
  • Restructured the general employee orientation, updated the department website so it’s more user friendly and built a Facebook and Twitter page for the department.
  • Began sending all security officers to the Homeland Security Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) with the goal of having all UNC officers trained in the basic healthcare incident command and response through the CDP by January 2017.

Kevin Wren

Director of Safety, Security and Emergency Management

York County, S.C.
Notable Achievements:

  • Developed and delivered an emergency management planning system with role-specific and site-specific components, quick reference guides and comprehensive scenario protocols.
  • Rolled out a district-wide online safety training system that led to an 18 percent decrease in accidents and claims.
  • Executed more than $5 million in security-driven capital improvements involving structural upgrades for access control, visitor management, video surveillance, digital radios and fences.
