DC Couple Tricked in Home-Buying Cyber Attack
A couple in Washington D.C. has lost $1.5 million after falling for a home-buying cyber attack. The hackers directed the money into a private account instead of the title company the couple closed with.
The company made an initial deposit after being contacted by the company. A second email, coming from hackers but disguised as the same sender, requester the $1.5 million that was then stolen.
The couple filed a lawsuit against that company, Federal Title and Escrow Company, seeking their money back plus additional damages since May when the money was stolen. The lawsuit alleges that the title company was negligent in its cyber security, which led to the hack.
