Facebook and Google Victims of $100M Payment Scam

In 2013, Elvaldas Rimasauskas allegedly pulled off an elaborate scheme that ended up defrauding Facebook and Google of over $100m over a two year span.

The man forged email addresses, invoices, and corporate stamps to impersonate an Asian manufacturer the companies do business with regularly. Using a phishing scam, the man convinced accounting departments from the two companies to make transfers of tens of millions of dollars to him under the guise that he was a part of Quanta Computer.

Once the departments realized the scam, they had already paid over $100m, and got federal agents involved to track down the culprit. Rimasauskas maintains his innocence.
