Major Internet Outage Across US Cause by Typo

Amazon has admitted that the recent internet outage across the US was not due to malware, but instead the result of a typo.

The issue caused thousands of websites and services to become unavailable, including Quora, Slack, Medium, Giphy, Trello, Splitwise, Soundcloud, and IFTTT, and many more.

The root of the cause occurred when the Amazon S3 team were debugging the S3 cloud-storage billing system. The team incorrectly entered one of the inputs to the command when attempting to shut down a small amount of servers. A much larger amount of servers were shut down instead, leading to outages.
