iHomework

Welcome to the new and better way to manage your school work. The iHomework app makes it easy to track classes, assignments and deadlines in a way that’s automatically synced between all your devices.

Dropbox

Never max out your phone’s storage space again when you start using Dropbox to store your documents. This app lets you keep and access school papers, group presentations, spreadsheets and more — all on the cloud — so you can access them from anywhere with an Internet connection. Save your work to Dropbox when you’re in the library or at the student center, and look at it on your phone.

CliffsNotes

The CliffsNotes app is not your parents’ CliffsNotes. With the easy-to-access app, you not only have literature study guides at your fingertips, but you can listen to audio while you’re walking around campus, driving to classes, or running errands on the weekend.

Mathway

Ever wish you had a genius friend to help with your math problems? Mathway is the next best thing, offering a step-by-step guide to algebra, geometry and other math problems. All you have to do is check your work against this app to see if you’re coming up with the right solutions.

Dragon Dictation

Do you have your best ideas when you’re away from a computer? Is it easier and faster to speak than type? If so, consider this free dictation app, which transcribes your speech into a file you can email to yourself.

Self Control for Study

Have a hard time tuning out your Instagram feed or Facebook updates while you’re in class, trying to study, or working on a paper? Try this app, which bans the use of apps for a specific period of time, while still allowing your phone and text messages to work as normal.

TextbookRush

Stop putting all your money into textbooks when you implement the TextbookRush app in your routine. With this app, you can buy used books, rent textbooks and sell books you no longer need — all easily and in little time.

MindNode

The MindNode app takes mind mapping to the next level, giving you an easy and intuitive way to graph your ideas and thoughts visually. Prep for papers, work out tough concepts, and organize projects by using this visually oriented tool!

Wolfram|Alpha

Access expert knowledge in a wide range of subjects, from precalculus to astronomy, in the Wolfram|Alpha app. Designed to make information more accessible and computable, this app links you with answers to questions, generated reports and more.

Evernote

The Evernote app is more than a way to take notes on your phone; it’s also a great resource for turning those notes into study guides. Download the StudyBlue app alongside it, for example, and you can turn your notes into flashcards and practice quizzes — not to mention set study reminders before test day.

If you’re like most college students, you take your smartphone everywhere. It’s your music player, organizer, communicator, list-keeper, link to news, link to friends and more. Yet even if your phone already feels like an appendage, there might be more that it can do for you, especially in the academic realm.

That same device you use to check emails and take photos is also a powerful tool for improving your college experience. In today’s universities, technology is becoming as much a part of the class as a number two pencil.

Class emails inform students about the syllabus for a course they are taking. Assignments can be sent to instructors directly instead of printed out and handed in. Online textbooks allow students to complete assignments from anywhere and send immediate results to instructors. Entire courses are moving online, and it’s even possible to earn a degree without ever stepping into a physical classroom.

In today’s digital age, putting technology to work for you is a smart way to get ahead in college. To improve the way you study, find books, stay productive and succeed in school this semester – apps on your mobile device can help students in so many ways that it’s sometimes tough to keep track of them all.

Alison Blankenship works at TextbookRush in the marketing department. TextbookRush is a one-stop shop where students can buy and sell textbooks online.
