Tigera, Creator of Project Calico, Joins CrowdStrike, Google, Huawei, Isovalent, Meta, and Microsoft as Platinum Member in eBPF Foundation

Company also releases free certification course to learn eBPF and Calico eBPF data plane

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#devops—Tigera, which provides security and observability for containers, Kubernetes and cloud, today announced it has joined the eBPF Foundation as a Platinum member to help further advance the technical direction and vision of eBPF (extended Berkeley Packet Filter) technology, working in cooperation with other Platinum members CrowdStrike, Google, Huawei, Isovalent, Meta (previously Facebook), and Microsoft.

“eBPF is one of the most significant technologies in modern data centers and cloud native implementations,” said Brendan Creane, head of engineering at Tigera, who will be joining the eBPF Foundation governing board. “We’re big believers in eBPF and have embraced its use in our products to strengthen the protection and observability of cloud native applications. We look forward to working with the governing board and other members to contribute, share, and promote eBPF innovation.”

Calico Open Source provides an eBPF, standard Linux and Windows data plane. In addition, Tigera uses eBPF extensively to deliver observability in its product line, Calico Cloud and Calico Enterprise, based on Calico Open Source. The eBPF data plane improves performance, latency and user experience for many use cases. Calico is the only open-source option with a pluggable data plane architecture enabling support for multiple data planes, including eBPF, standard Linux, and Windows.

“With eBPF, we’re able to deliver security that is built using more context than simply setting thresholds. This provides better levels of control and visibility into the runtime behavior of applications, which can be used to troubleshoot performance issues,” said Creane.

New eBPF Course

As part of its commitment to contribute to the eBPF community, Tigera recently added a free, online, self-paced Certified Calico Operator eBPF course to its educational offerings. Participants can learn how to run and modify eBPF programs and use the Calico eBPF data plane, along with deployment options. The level 2 course assumes the learner is familiar with Calico and has already completed the Certified Calico Operator: Level 1 course (also free, online, self-paced).

In total, Tigera now offers three certifications to advance skills while demonstrating cloud-native application expertise for those working in security, networking, DevOps, site reliability and platform architecture. Go here to enroll and learn more.

In addition to its new eBPF certification course, Tigera offers several free eBPF guides for readers to learn about eBPF architecture, use cases, and concepts. The guides can be accessed here.

About Tigera

Tigera empowers organizations to secure, observe, and troubleshoot containers, Kubernetes, and cloud. Its commercial products include Calico Enterprise, a self-managed security and observability platform, and Calico Cloud, a Kubernetes-native cloud service that extends the declarative nature of Kubernetes. Its open-source offering, Calico Open Source, is the most widely adopted container networking and security solution. Tigera’s solutions specify security and observability as code to ensure consistent enforcement of security policies, which enables DevOps, platform, and security teams to protect workloads, detect threats, achieve continuous compliance, and troubleshoot service issues in real time.

Powering more than 100 million containers across 1.5 million nodes in 166 countries, Calico software is supported across all major cloud providers and Kubernetes distributions, and is used by leading companies including AT&T, Discover, Merck, ServiceNow, HanseMerkur, RealPage, L3Harris, and Mindbody.
