Google is planning to wind down Currents in favor of Spaces, its platform dedicated for organizing people, topics and projects in Google Workspace.
The planned wind down will begin in 2023 as the company will bring remaining content and communities from Currents to the new Spaces experience, the company says in a new blog.
The new Spaces experience will have features to help users communicate and collaborate, including support for larger communities and leadership communication, investments in advanced search, tools for content moderation and more.
Google say sit is also investing more in search and discoverability and capabilities for app development. It is also investing in enterprise-grade security and compliance, including data protection, data loss prevention and Vault support.
Organizations still using Currents will be given a timeline for opting in to data migration and other milestones in the coming months, according to the company.
The company says the transition to hybrid work is driving this move as customers are increasingly using Chat and Spaces to communicate and collaborate.
“Upgrading Google Currents to Spaces removes a separate, siloed destination for users, and provides organizations with a modern, enterprise-grade experience that reflects how the world is working today,” the company says. “Spaces provide a central place for teams to engage in topic-based discussions, share knowledge and ideas, move projects forward, and build communities and team culture.”
Primary admins at customer domains will get an email in the coming months with more information about this migration, the company says.
Google introduced Spaces last June as a platform designed to take over the Rooms experience in Google Chat and create a dedicated place for collaboration. That included a new user interface and other features like in-line topic threading, presence indicators, custom statuses, expressive reactions and a collapsible view.
The platform is also heavily integrated with other Workspace apps, including Gmail, Calendar, Drive and Meet. Learn more about the Google Spaces features in this previous post.
