Microsoft is going green, and this time it’s not with sustainable technology.
Instead, Microsoft has partnered with Kind Financial, a start-up based in Los Angeles that makes technology tools for marijuana-related businesses to navigate the rules and regulations in states across the country.
It’s not an easy landscape to navigate. Some states offer legal marijuana to the public, while others offer medical marijuana only to those carrying cards. In addition, states like Massachusetts will soon have voted to change the legality of marijuana distribution, and other states are expected to follow in the coming years. With all of these different states, and levels of legality, it’s not easy for companies that wish to operate throughout the country to keep track of every regulation state-to-state.
Kind sells “Agrisoft Seed to Sale software,” that lets growers track their plants from planting to the point of sale, and it provides kiosks that cannabis businesses use for cash management inside their stores, according to CNBC.
It’s the first time Microsoft has formed a partnership within the marijuana industry. The deal involves Kind participating in Microsoft’s health and human services pod for managed service providers, meaning Kind’s products will be available using Microsoft’s Azure government cloud product.
“Kind’s strategic industry positioning, experienced team and top-notch-technology running in the Microsoft Azure Government cloud, made for an easy decision to align efforts,” says Kimberly Nelson, executive director of state and local government solutions for Microsoft, in a press release.
