Online training is only one aspect of professional development that ed tech companies are exploring.
Startups like Degreed and Accredible are working with employers to create new forms of transcripts that account for learning (like online training) that takes place outside of traditional classrooms.
Other companies, like Smarterer (recently acquired by Pluralsight), are developing skills and tests that test-takers can use to enhance their resumes and employers can use to assess job applicants’ capabilities.
With employers in all industries working to cope with digital skills gaps, the market for professional development tools such as these is likely to continue to grow.
All investors would love to have a crystal ball. Failing that, all we can do is identify environments that are conducive to fostering growing trends. With increased demand for more digital skills education starting in early grades and for more opportunities for lifelong learning, products for the K-12 market and continuing professional development are looking like pretty good bets for 2015 and beyond.
