CIOs are obviously involved in providing the technology for these courses, but more than half are also advising on the creation of online content.
This signifies the expanding role of CIOs as more than just technical support during times of crisis.
CBE and Network Analytics
CIOs in their role as learning developers are an important factor in the rising popularity of competency based education (CBE).
This teaching model uses technology to allow students to learn at their own pace. About 36 percent of CIOs said they have implemented CBE in their schools. Network analytics plays a crucial part in tracking the progress of CBE and other online behavior on campuses.
Sixty-seven percent of CIOs use the data gained by big data and analytics to manage user experience of the network and plan for its capacity. Thirty-three percent use the information to assess student development. Less than 10 percent have yet to use data from network analytics.
Moving Forward:
Given the new push technology is giving higher education, CIOs need to shift their roles from academic tech developers to strategic innovators.
Going forward, the functions of new CIOs will be less about curriculum and more about being leaders in creating business strategies and a richer campus experience in the changing landscape of technology and education.
Their priority will always be on aligning the needs of the university communities with global technology trends to help guarantee a quality educational experience for students.
