Shenandoah University‘s Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre made the switch from analog to digital with a DiGiCo SD9.
The DiGiCo SD9 provides a variety of features to enhance the audio experience during a theater production, including:
• The Auto Update function, which updates channel parameters to all cues, and Aliases, which affect cues with the same parameters.
• Visual CG programming interface and SD9T’s 12 CG channels, which allow engineers to maintain control of a changing cast onstage by assigning and unassigning CG members with reference to the cue list.
• The Players function, which allows engineers to manipulate cast changes on stage, including updates to specific settings required for a certain actor.
• Template sessions and Sets, which allows a user to create Sets and change the console layout to display members of that Set.
Aside from enhanced production audio, Golder O’Neill says students will get real world experience from handling the new equipment.
“These students are learning how to use technology that they will be expected to know how to use when they leave school and get out into the ‘real world,'” says O’Neill, head of Shenandoah University’s recording program, in a previous statement. “A majority of shows both on Broadway and in other musical theatre centers around the world are mixed on DiGiCo consoles.”
O’Neill also says that the DiGiCO SD9 has not only improved the theater’s audio experience, but also made preparing for the next show easier and more seamless.
“Moving to the SD9 has been about more than just feature sets or overall audio quality, although those are great,” he said. “But the ability to be developing one show while all of the settings for the current show are saved and recallable all on the same console has made things much easier and smoother.”
