The George Washington University Law School has unveiled new plans to launch a national security and cybersecurity specialization for students to partake in this fall, according to a report by The GW Hatchet. The program will allow law students that are interested in internet and cybersecurity to learn about the intersection of law and technology in 12 courses that can be completed in a year. This initiative is a result of the growing number of positions dealing with cybersecurity and the growing number of graduates accepting positions in from counterterrorism to information privacy.
Providing the specialized program will allow students to gain more detailed understanding of a growing field, and George Washington University, given it’s DC location, is an excellent place to launch the experiment. “Students at GW have been on the forefront in learning how to think about and talk about cybersecurity problems,” said Paul Rosenzweig, a professional lecturer and soon to be the Cybersecurity Law and Policy and Artificial Intelligence professor at the law school. “This is the right place for students to get a broad understanding of all that.” Rosenzweig’s classes will allow students to explore a field in the city where cybersecurity policy making is on the “front burner.”
The growth of the field is undeniable all over the country, which is largely due to the growing number of privacy and data breach scandals going on around the world. Nearly 70 percent of corporate law departments are reporting a need for more proactive involvement in cybersecurity, and there is a shortage of lawyers that possess the skills that would make them qualified to handle these kinds of cases. Markus Rauschecker, the program director at University of Maryland’s law school cites the high demand for these jobs, saying, “There are many legal and policy issues associated with cybersecurity, which I think is why law students and lawyers are taking notice and really seeing an opportunity there to become involved.”
