A larger-than-life experience is what theater-goers expect when they settle into their seats at the cinema. Samsung Electronics is taking big screen viewing to a whole new level with the introduction of its 3D-ready Onyx LED screen. Measuring 14 meters wide, it is able to envelop attendees in the movie action, and has already been installed Capital Cinema, located in the Xicheng district in Beijing. The massive screen is available for other commercial theaters to deploy.

This 14-meter-wide screen is the newest version of Samsung’s Onyx line, which was initially introduced with a 10-meter screen in July 2017. The new Onyx model is 1.4 times wider and features nearly twice the surface area of the original model. Why the jump from 10 to 14 meters? Plain and simple: consumer and business demand, according Samsung.

“The new, wider version of the Samsung Onyx is a direct response to the cinema industry demand,” says Nick Conti, Business Development Senior Manager for Cinema at Samsung. “This new size allows us to expand our portfolio and offer more variety to theater owners. We’re excited to partner with Capital Cinema to help showcase the new industry standard for picture quality on the big screen and continue to.”

The Capital Cinema is one of the top five theaters in China, based on ticket sales.

“We’re always looking for new ways to enhance our customer experience,” adds Deng Yonghong, CEO of Capital Cinema. “That’s why we are absolutely thrilled to incorporate the world’s first 14-meter Onyx Cinema LED screen into our theaters as it creates a best-in-class cinema experience that is truly unmatched, and an immersive environment unlike anything our customers have experienced before.”

The new Onyx LED screen installed at Capital Theater is 3D-ready and combines 4K resolution, HDR picture quality, and peak brightness level of 88fL—nearly six times greater than standard projector technologies. It is also Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI)-certified, providing the flexibility to display a wide range of content types.
