Purdue University Dresses Up Sports Replays with Paint Tele-Illustration Tool

In order to create more exciting replays during live sports games, Purdue University implemented Paint, by ChyronHego.

And, even though tele-illustration tools aren’t a new feature to the eyes of sports fans, Hall says they give game attendees something exciting to look at in between plays during a game.

“We use the Paint program to bring specialized highlights…to keep the crowd’s energy up,” he says. “When you’re trying to entice them to do that and in some cases, pay 60 to 80 dollars for a seat, you need to be able to bring people stuff that they could see at home, enhance their live view experience. We think by adding this, we’re at least keeping up with what they could potentially see at home, and give them some sort of incentive to come.”

2) Preparing students for the real world

Since Paint is easy to learn, Purdue’s production team trains students how to use it.

“Since what we do is live production, the students we work with have some sort of interest in audio, video stage, scenic, whatever,” Hall says. “We always have found a way to integrate students into a production. We feel as the university’s live production company, we need to be using the end product, which is students. We pair our students up with professionals and then they play a significant role in making an event happen.”

Working with Paint also enables students to work with equipment and in an atmosphere they will see in the real world.

Plus, Horton says working with ChyronHego helps students get a foot in the door in terms of making connections and job contacts.

“We have a really good relationship with Chyron,” he says. “We’ll get some people who are talented and innovative come through, and we can call Chyron up and say, “hey, we’ve got a promising student here.” Not only is [Paint] a tool, but it also provides an avenue for students to get out there and be able to make contacts in the industry.”

The only downside the production team faces with Paint is speed.

Horton says the hardest part about the tool is making quick decisions on what graphics to display on a replay during a game.

If the decision takes too long, the replay becomes stale and risks losing the crowd’s excitement.
