Surveillance Cameras Add Another Layer of Security for Wisconsin Elementary Schools

Eight cameras are installed at each elementary school in the Janesville School District.

School and police officials here say security cameras installed outside of all elementary schools in the Janesville School District add an additional layer of safety and security.

Lincoln Elementary School Principal Shawn Galvin told Gazette Xtra that oftentimes people don’t think about the worst-case scenario that could happen, and the cameras are meant to remind people that safety is still a paramount issue.

“We always have to plan for the worst and hope for the best,” he said. “But at the same time, you do have to move on, you have to live your life and do your job, which is to educate kids and keep that as the focus.”

Each elementary school will have eight surveillance cameras, according to the report. In additional, the schools will practice lock-down drills, have radios connected to the Janesville Police Department and require employees to use electronic key fobs to enter buildings.

Lincoln Elementary School also has an electric sign-in process for visitors to help the school sort through the names of guests more efficiently, according to Galvin.

“I honestly feel like we’re in a good situation,” he said. “I think we have a lot of things in place, and I feel like we have a secure environment. I think there are things we can always improve on, but always keeping a focus on safety here in the district allows us to do the other things.”

Watch: from Gazette Extra, Janesville Police Sgt. Brian Donohoue talks about a new tool for school district students and staff to use to report a dangerous situation:
