Microsoft Internet Explorer

Microsoft is making it safer to browse online, join networks, and help protect devices and sensitive data with Microsoft Edge Secure Network.

The Microsoft Edge Secure Network is currently in preview mode and allows the following:

Encrypts the connection: Encrypts users’ internet connection to help protect data from online threats. When using the secure network, data is routed from Edge through an encrypted tunnel to create a secure connection, even when using a non-secure URL that starts with HTTP. This makes it harder for hackers to access browsing data on a shared public Wi-Fi network.

Helps prevent online tracking: By encrypting web traffic directly from Microsoft Edge, Microsoft will help prevent internet service providers from collecting user browsing data, such as details about which websites the user visits.

Keeps location private: Online entities can use location and IP address for profiling and sending targeted ads. The Secure Network lets users browse with a virtual IP address that masks the IP and replaces the geolocation with a similar regional address to make it more difficult for online trackers to follow users as they browse.

Is free to use: Users get 1 gigabyte of free data every month when they sign into Microsoft Edge with their Microsoft Account.

Microsoft’s Secure Network is a service provided in partnership with Cloudflare.

How to turn on Microsoft Edge Secure NetworkTo turn on this feature:

Select  Settings and more  > Turn on Microsoft Edge Secure Network

  1.  If you are not signed into your Microsoft Account, you will be prompted to sign in or create one.
  2. The solid shield icon will appear in the browser frame; your browsing traffic is now protected by Microsoft Edge Secure Network.
  3. The feature will turn off automatically when you close Microsoft Edge. You must turn on Microsoft Edge Secure Network again for your next browsing session if you wish to use it.
