Training and testing is vital to mitigating human error when it comes to cyber security.

As data breaches across the globe wreak havoc on organizations of all types and sizes, the security industry is becoming more proactive in educating stakeholders on cyber-defense measures. Upcoming educational opportunities supported by ADT and Johnson Controls are just two examples of this movement.

On ‌Oct 12, ADT will present a webcast titled “Anatomy of a Cyberattack,” which will delve into how cyber criminals are evolving their tactics. Beginning at 2 p.m. EDT, the one-hour webcast will provide a roadmap for navigating potential future attacks and explain how businesses can reduce their exposure. Attendees will learn practical guidance about the most prominent types of cyberattacks, the latest on cybersecurity regulations, plus what pitfalls to avoid in the wake of an attack.

Two subject matter experts will take part in the presentation:

  • William Ridgway is a former federal prosecutor and experienced trial and appellate lawyer whose practice focuses on cybersecurity and data privacy matters, white collar crime and intellectual property litigation. Prior to joining Skadden, he served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois, where he served as the Deputy Chief of the National Security and Cybercrimes Section.
  • Special Agent Eric Brelsford of the FBI’s Criminal Computer Intrusion Squad has been the lead investigator on a variety of cyber investigations. These include data breaches, cyber extortion, financial account takeover, malware distribution, botnet operations, and denial of service attacks. Prior to joining the FBI, Agent Brelsford worked in the private sector performing computer & information security consulting.

National Cyber Security Awareness Month

Johnson Controls (JCI) is helping raise awareness for National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) throughout October. Launched 14 years ago, the online safety awareness and education initiative was co-founded by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

NCSAM is presenting opportunities for businesses and individuals to become educated on the importance of cybersecurity and seek partners that can offer the tools and resources to reduce the risk of vulnerabilities. The program is offering five weekly educational themes aimed at consumers and organizations.

For its part, JCI bills itself as offering a holistic system approach to cybersecurity through its Cyber Protection Program for security products. JCI says the six-part program is run by an autonomous product security team which drives and monitors cybersecurity for its line of access control, video management and surveillance products. The program is also said to provide application guidance to organizations for select regulatory compliance and identifies and reacts to new vulnerabilities as they occur.

“Cybersecurity in the workplace is everyone’s business,” Kristy Dunchak, director of product management, Building Technologies and Solutions, JCI, says in a statement. “Organizations of all sizes can protect themselves and others against cyber threats by being aware of the security issues in play and by seeking a partner who has developed solutions with cyber security in mind.”

Throughout the month of October, the Cyber Protection team will sharing tips on cybersecurity best practices through blogs available at tycosecurityproducts.com.
