USB-C

USB-C is gaining traction, as most Android-based smartphones and tablets are now shipping with USB-C onboard. The benefit: USB-C integration provides a compact, single connector for power, data, video, and more.

Devices that have at least one USB-C port is forecast to reach nearly five billion devices in 2021, up from 300 million devices in 2016, growing at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 70 percent, according to the latest research from IHS Markit.

Naturally, USB-C connectors should experience healthy growth, as well, and IHS forecasts the USB-C connector market to reach nearly $1.2 billion in 2021, growing at a CAGR of 30 percent.

Historically, the industrial handheld computer market has been slower to adopt new standards, but not this time. Upcoming industrial handheld computers as well as the Zebra TC20/25, Samsung Tab Active2, and Samsung Galaxy use USB-C. Industry professionals expect to see USB-C adopted by a majority of new industrial handhelds and ruggedized Windows PC’s and tablets across manufacturers.

Leveraging the transition in the industrial sector is Portsmith. The company’s Swoopy 3C USB-C 3.1 to Gigabit Ethernet adapter facilitates the connection of USB-C handheld devices to a wired Ethernet connection, which offers greater security than Wi-Fi or Bluetooth in enterprise environments.

“For businesses deploying USB-C devices in enterprise applications that need wired Ethernet plus charging and durability beyond a consumer device, Swoopy 3C is the solution,” says Ryan Gray, president of Portsmith. “As USB-C becomes ubiquitous in enterprise and industrial applications, the Portsmith Swoopy 3C is the only product available that delivers this combination of features.”

Additional features that matter to enterprise users include BOM stability, which means corporate IT buyers can rest assured that the design is not going to change after the product is qualified. Swoopy 3C incorporates the ultra-rugged housing design proven in the original USB-A and USB-micro Swoopy products that Portsmith has been selling for years. The product carries FCC Class B / CE compliance.
