In the case of BCUSD, one of the biggest challenges the district faced when implementing the Destiny Resource Manager was creating a structured environment that would allow assets to come in and flow through one centralized person.
“Our biggest challenge was not having the right positions and systems in place. We have to take all of these people in these departments and figure out who should be doing what role and who should be using this resource,” says Taylor. “Staffing and communication is important, just like with anything else. You can buy technology but if you don’t have a system in place to use it, you’re going to struggle.”
Along with having the right systems and staffing in place, schools need to set goals and understand what they want out of the technology they are using. With BCUSD’s use of the Destiny Resource Manager, the district has learned to set goals and communicate with Follett to help achieve those goals.
“It’s important to give Follett feedback and understand what you want out of the product and defining the problem you want to solve. Your goals influence what resources you put in Follett. If we don’t put in the resources in the right way, it doesn’t give us the data we want. So it’s important to really define your goals and the problems you want to solve with the product,” says Taylor.
BCUSD’s transition to 1:1 is an ongoing challenge, but with proper management of its resources and a clear insight into its investments, the district is well on its way to implementing a successful 1:1 program that will greatly enhance its students’ learning experiences.
