By now, you’ve probably heard about Google Classroom, the company’s latest edtech platform that combines a suite of productivity tools along with Gmail, Drive and Docs. It’s free for any teacher or school with a Google Apps for Education account. Classroom is designed to help teachers create and collect assignments and essentially manage their courses in a paperless environment that is easy and efficient. It also allows teachers and students to collaborate together in a cloud-based environment.
Here are 8 things you can do with Google Classroom:
1. Create a video playlist: Using Classroom, teachers can attach YouTube videos to digital handouts or assignments for students to view on-demand.
2. Make Instantaneous copies: Teachers have the ability to automatically create a copy of a Google Doc for each student.
3. Track student submissions: When a student use Google Classroom to hand in an assignment, the platform tracks their submission. Teachers can see how many students have handed the assignment in and how many are still missing.
4. Go paperless: Create, distribute and collect multimedia assignments via Drive.
5. Collaborate on assignments: Students with access to the same document can work together in real-time.
6. Start Discussions: Teachers can post discussion threads similar to those on Google + to spur conversation inside and outside of the classroom.
7. Send Mass Messages: Send emails or messages to an entire class simultaneously without the need for individual email addresses.
8. Provide real-time feedback: When students are working on an assignment in their Drive folder, teachers can access the document and post notes and comments in real-time to help a student or guide them in the right direction.
