New WHITEBOX OPEN Servers from Equus

The new WHITEBOX OPEN units are tailored to the needs of content delivery and delivery network providers, cloud services providers, enterprise IT departments, and other users with demanding workloads.

Equus Complete Solutions has added the new WHITEBOX OPEN R2660 and R2660 NVMe servers to its portfolio of custom open-hardware server and storage platforms. Equipped with dual Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs, the two new units are designed for customers with heavy performance requirements, like like content delivery and delivery network providers, cloud services providers, and enterprise IT.

According to Equus, the 2U 12 Bay R2660 server features 12 3.5” hot-swap HDD bays and 16 DIMMs for up to 2TB of memory, as well as OCP slots that accommodate multi-vendor cards including 1, 10, 40, 50, 100 Gbps Ethernet NICs, and NVMe/SSD storage modules. Equus can customize the device to an end user’s specific needs.

Optimized for applications that demand higher storage performance, the R2660 NVMe supports eight 3.5”/2.5” hot-swap HDD bays and four NVMe bays.

Both new products support the full range of features Equus includes with WHITEBOX servers, including OpenBMC system management, an open-source implementation of the Baseboard Management Controller firmware stack that works across heterogeneous systems and can free companies from proprietary system management vendor lock-in.

The R2660 and R2660 NVMe also support LinuxBoot, which Equus says allows it to customize the server BIOS for flexibility, improve security, and accelerate the boot process. Each server’s OCP networking enables it to generate cost savings, free up rack space, and reduce cabling complexity by utilizing network controller sideband interface in-band network management communication, instead of a separate IPMI 1GbE management port and associated dedicated network.

The WHITEBOX OPEN servere family debuted in June.
