What interview questions would you and your team ask candidates for a User Interface Designer position?

Naturally, the answer to this question will vary based on the individual. There are always those same solid conversation-starting, breaking-the-ice questions that we assume you already know to ask.

But what specific User Interface Designer interview questions are tried-and-true in the industry?

You should always carefully consider the individual and their work/extracurricular history before formulating a full list of questions to ask. Also, app developer interviews tend to involve coding tests. But your prep time is limited, and you’re not responsible for administering any tests. What should you ask?

We’ve reached out to our IT, CIO, and other contacts to conglomerate a list of User Interface Designer interview questions and hope you will find some of them useful in your search for the perfect candidate.

Basic User Interface Designer interview questions

What’s the worst app you’ve ever encountered in terms of UX?

  • This is a bold question to start with, but it’s also a perfect look into your candidate’s mind. By asking this, you’re getting a sense of what your candidate prizes over everything else when they design… and likewise, what they avoid like the plague in their own work.

What variables factor in to your timeline estimations?

  • How do they update you and your executive team regarding their work timelines? Knowing what to expect out of their work habits is critical for this job. Keep an ear out for terms like “Function Point Analysis,” “Use Case Template,” and R”elative Mass Valuation.”

Can you define “scraping” in UiPath?

  • Categorize this under “basic knowledge:” they should be able to explain that scraping basically means to transfer data from a browser into a database.

Give us an idea of what your design process looks like?

  • Look for answers which seem to grasp that different processes can benefit different situations. Also keep an ear out for explanations which touch on user research, testing, information architecture, interaction design.
