It’s no secret that bringing technology into your classroom will be a challenge—one that will not only be rewarding for you, but educational for your students. With new apps, tools or project ideas, students are empowered to try new things and expand their skill sets.
Before you start using any new technology with your students, however, there are a few things every teacher needs to know about technology integration. Keep these tips in mind as you navigate the school year with fun tools, apps and platforms.
First, Assess the Basics
Before you can bring technology into your classroom, you need to make sure that you’re school is at least somewhat equipped to technically support your new adventures. Find your school IT manager or computer lab instructor and ask about:
WiFi: Does your school have it? If not, can you plug into the Ethernet, bringing the Internet directly to your own computer or laptop.
In-school tech support: Is someone available, during the day, if something goes wrong? If not, that’s okay, but know that you may need to be a bit more flexible in the event that something is not working or the Internet cuts out.
Devices: Does your schools own any devices—tablet, old cell phones, Chromebooks—that your students can use in a technology lab or the classroom? You don’t need these to take advantage of technology in your instruction, but they would open you up to more opportunities.
