IoT Systems Coming to the Forefront of the Business World

Companies like Splunk are developing new technologies to bring IoT systems that will help customers analyze complex data more efficiently and clearly.

Forrester Research predicts that 2018 could be the year that Internet of Things (IoT) systems are ready to be implemented on a business scale, with a variety of vendors announcing their new Internet of Things products and divisions. SAS has established a formal IoT division and Splunk recently announced the development of their first technology that is designed to fit the IoT market. The new technology—Splunk Industrial Asset Intelligence—will help energy, manufacturing, and transportation organizations monitor and analyze IoT data to simplify the information coming out of these complex industrial systems.

According to Maureen Fleming, Splunk IDC Analyst and Program VP, customers have been asking for this kind feature for a long time, inspiring the company to jump on the internet of Things bandwagon. One of their customers, Infigen Energy, an Australian wind farm developer and operator, has been pleased with the swift integration of Splunk IAI, reporting that the technology makes troubleshooting much easier, allows Infigen to build its first machine learning models, and makes complex and cumbersome data clearer.

Splunk has set up many of its customers, many of whom were manually entering complex IoT data into Excel, with a limited availability trial-run of the new Splunk IAI. Seema Haji, director of product marketing for IoT and business analytics at Splunk, said that their existing customers are looking for a way to more efficiently work with and understand cumbersome IoT data, and Splunk IAI provides the solution.

Though Splunk has proven itself to be a contender in the IoT data market, they are not without competition. Giants in the technology industry like Microsoft and Amazon are beginning to build out more sophisticated analytics capabilities, and there is never a shortage of startups. Splunk’s secret weapon in the fight to lead the pack is their low-code model. “Customer companies don’t want to invest in a lot of data scientists to get the initial value out of the platform,” Fleming says. “The low-code approach is really important.”
