Alphabetical Order

Alphabetical Order teaches children their ABC’s as well as letter names, sounds, uppercase and lowercase letters. It’s designed for children ages 5 and under.

Cimo Spelling

Cimo Spelling teaches children to spell high frequency words from the Dolch Site Word List. This includes words that cannot be learned using pictures. In this game, children must help Cimo the penguin reach an iceberg to catch a fish. Each correct letter acts as a bridge to the iceberg. When students spell an entire word correctly Cimo is able to make it to his destination. Cimo Spelling is designed for for children in kindergarten through third grade.

Fact or Opinion

Fact or Opinion is a card game. Each card in the deck contains a statement that is either a fact or an opinion and children have to identify the statement as one of the other. An automatic scoring features lets students know whether or not they chose the right answer.

Grammar Jammer Elementary Edition

Grammar Jammer helps students to learn the basics of English Language Arts. It includes lessons and quizzes that test students’ knowledge of adjectives, adverbs, capitalization, conjunctions, contractions, nouns, punctuation, sentences and verbs. This app is designed for children ages 3-6.

This app works as a dictionary of idioms and an interactive, multiple-choice quiz. Users have the option of sorting the idioms by categories including Top 100 Idioms, Animals, Business, Clothes and Colors, Food, legal and Negotiations.

iTooch is designed to teach students foundational English Language Arts concepts like vowels and rhyming words. There are four categories of activities, 50 chapters and 1,548 activities that align with first grade curriculum.

The Opposites

The Opposites is a word game challenge where children ages seven and up match opposite words in a race against time. There are 10 levels, bonus rounds and high scorer medals.

It’s not easy to find good, educational apps for your students. There are so many options out there that it’s easy to get excited about an app only to find out that’s its not exactly what you thought once it’s downloaded.  As schools continue to introduce tablets in the classroom and embrace digital teaching tools the demand for quality applications will only grow. Fortunately, there are a lot of great options for teaching English or math, which means teachers have a lot of applications to choose from.

Here is our list of 10 literacy apps for K-12 classrooms. These apps teach students core English language arts and reading skills like spelling, grammar,letter sounds, rhyming words and more.
