If you’re like me, sticking to a single digital audio workstation (DAW) makes a lot of sense. There are always new techniques to master, plug-ins to explore and the familiarity of the program of choice means easier music creation and mastering.

When I am away from my computer and relying on a different DAW, I tend to feel lost using a foreign workstation or cheated of quality recordings by being forced to use a lesser device. Thankfully, app developers are continuing to put musicians’ minds at ease with even more competent mobile applications that cater to all of our technological needs with the convenience of mobile devices. Mobile DAWs are a step in the right direction. From MIDI control capability to acute editing features, mobile DAWs not only rival desktop workstations in convenience, but surpass them when it comes to on-the-spot recording and on-the-go mixing.

Of course, if you are looking for high-quality recordings there is nothing better than a good mixing board and a quality interface, but mobile DAWs are a great option when you are forced to go without.

When it comes to sampling and MIDI control, these apps offer an amazing twist to traditional controllers. With robust features, the apps that combine control and editing into one package give you the control you need, and often wish you had, at the tip of your fingers — drastically cutting down the devices required for conventional MIDI set-ups.

With Cloud communication as a standard for most of these apps, sharing your work with others, and among devices, ensures that your projects are always accessible. Making sure that your projects are not trapped on your desktop, or smart device, is paramount for sharing and editing content with ease.

It is great to know that most major workstations are represented by their own specific app, and conveniently those that aren’t are not left out thanks to a few cover-all control apps.
