In November we discussed the implications of the Ericsson and Cisco partnership, and it looks like Cisco is doubling down on its Internet of Things (IoT) push in the new year. As we mentioned in November, Cisco is extremely strong when it comes to hardware but still needs to strengthen its digital approach when it comes to the cloud and connectivity. Not by any coincidence, the acquisition of Jasper Technologies, as reported by The Stack, will help them do just that. From The Stack:
Jasper provides cloud-based platforms that help companies manage Internet of Things services, connecting a wide variety of devices through cellular networks and then managing connectivity and collecting data through their Software as a Service (SaaS) platform. Customers can access their IoT data through a specialized Control Center, in categories as diverse as transportation and logistics, retail, industrial equipment, and security and home automation.
Cisco will be adding new services surrounding IoT, including enterprise Wi-Fi, security for connected devices and advanced analytics to better manage device usage. So not only will Cisco be able to provide the devices that will be connected when IoT starts growing in the coming years, the company will be able to provide the services and solutions that will manage and connect those devices as well.
“I am excited about the opportunity for Cisco and Jasper to accelerate how customers recognize the value of the Internet of Things,” said Chuck Robbins, Cisco Chief Executive Officer in a Cisco press release. “Together, we can enable service providers, enterprises and the broader ecosystem to connect, automate, manage, and analyze billions of connected things, across any network, creating new revenue streams and opportunities.”
Jasper Technologies is the industry leader in IoT service platform when it comes to number of enterprises and service providers. Many large enterprises and service providers have used Jasper platforms to scale IoT services globally. Using Jasper services, companies are able to connect any device over the cellular networks of the top global service providers and manage connectivity.
The acquisition, when established, will allow Cisco to combine products and services to offer a full end-to-end IoT solution that is interoperable across devices. Cisco will retain Jasper CEO Jahangir Mohammed in the acquisition to run Cisco’s new IoT software business unit under Rowan Trollope, Cisco senior vice president and general manager, IoT and Collaboration Technology Group. The acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter of fiscal year 2016, subject to customary closing conditions.
