Social media is making its way into college classrooms – literally.
The University of Missouri School of Journalism and global marketing agency VML partnered last week to create a professional training program for journalism students who are interested in working in social media.
The program will feature a course called “Advanced Social Media Strategies,” which will be offered in the spring of this year to undergraduate and graduate students.
According to a statement by the University of Missouri School of Journalism, the course will have students “plan, develop and implement social media for the Missouri School of Journalism’s social accounts,” for “the opportunity to showcase their work throughout the semester via the School’s public channels.”

Students will also “evaluate and integrate multiple social media platforms, upgrade their skills and provide access to experts in various channels.”
VML team members helped developed the course’s structure, course schedule, materials and other elements.
Co-instructors to the program, like Chad Martin, said that the social media skills students will learn in this course will prepare them for real-world social media work, including the work found in agency settings.
“”With this partnership, we’re able to better shape the future of talent across the strategic communications industry,” said Marin, director of social and emerging media for VML in a previous statement. “We’re honored to work with the Missouri School of Journalism to create this opportunity for students.”
