March to Cast a Light on Projectors & Why They Are Important in College Classrooms

HigherEdTechDecisions editor Jessica Kennedy introduces the string of projector-based stories that will be featured in March.

I was always terrible in math, even in the fourth grade.

Aside from the endless steps of long division, the only thing I remember from my fourth grade math class is the overhead projector.

I can still see the scratched-up transparent sheets the teacher placed on the projector, the green marker spelling out an equation that tripped up my brain. I can even smell sharp fumes of the spray cleaner the teacher used to wipe the sheets with. (Then, on to language and writing!)

An overhead projector from the old days.

However, as I advanced on to middle school and beyond, projectors felt more like dust-collecting fixtures in a classroom rather than a powerful teaching tool. Even as I attended class in college, where the projectors were more advanced and mounted to the ceiling, they just blended in with the drop-ceiling tiles. Plus, some of my professors didn’t even know how to turn them on and ate up class time calling IT to work out the bugs.

As I interviewed experts for HigherEdTD’s projector-themed stories for March, it became clear that projectors have evolved into much stronger machines than the overhead I grew up with.

It also became clear that projectors can serve as a college’s secret weapon, especially when it comes to educating the masses.

The experts I spoke with weighed in on all aspects of projectors, from a projector’s pumping guts, to determining which resolution and color brightness works best in certain settings, to picking apart the function of a lumen and preserving a projector’s lamp life.

I even learned that some projectors can connect to a college’s network wirelessly, come equipped with a digital pen for annotating on a digital image during a presentation, and are built with features that support interactivity between a professor and his or her students
.
This month focuses on the role projectors play in higher education. Our articles will answer all your questions on projector usage, including:

• How to draft your projector needs and shopping list

• How to find your perfect projector match

• Where and how to set up your projector in your classroom

• How to care for and maintain the life of your projector

• How to get optimal color brightness with 3LCD projector technologies

• What the costs of your projector’s replacement parts will be

• What mistakes end users commonly make with their projectors, and how to avoid them

• How to calculate the return on investment a projector will render your college

March also brings two free, downloadable guides crafted by our projector experts on how to save space in a college classroom once a projector is purchased and installed, and an internal tour of the nuts and bolts of a projector.

Plus, HigherEdTD’s sister publication Commercial Integrator will be venturing to Las Vegas for the Digital Signage Expo 2015. Editor Chelsea Cafiero will provide stories that are hot off the show floor.

If my calculations are correct, I think March is set to project some informative content.

I hope we answer all of your projector questions, especially the ones you might not have thought to ask.
