JBL Professional

EON Portable Powered Loudspeakers

JBL Professional EON Series of portable powered loudspeakers has been inducted into the TEC Foundation’s TECnology Hall of Fame. The TEC Foundation for Excellence in Audio established the TECnology Hall of Fame in 2004 to recognize audio products and innovations that have made a significant contribution to the advancement of audio technology. Inductees are chosen by a panel of more than 50 recognized audio experts.

When the JBL EON series was introduced in 1995 it single-handedly started the portable powered speaker revolution. The first two EON15P and EON10P models answered the need for powerful, easy-to-use, lightweight and durable portable PA and musical instrument speakers that combined the convenience of built-in amplification with outstanding sound quality.

The EON Series introduced a host of technical and design innovations including JBL’s patented Differential Drive® transducers, which employ a pair of in-line voice coils in separate magnetic gaps instead of the usual single voice coil-gap combination to enable maximum performance with minimum weight and more effective use of available enclosure space. The use of JBL’s Thermomaster® Total Thermal Management System provided efficient cooling without the need for fans or bulky heatsinks.

The EON Series was an instant hit, embraced by consumers and fueling the subsequent growth of the powered molded-enclosure integrated system segment of the MI market. Over time, the EON series evolved and expanded. The second-generation G2 models offered upgraded drivers, higher power and expanded input functionality. Today, the JBL EON Series continues its tradition of excellence with the 2-way, 15-inch EON515XT.

“We are extremely proud that our EON series has been chosen for induction into the TECnology Hall of Fame,” said Andy Flint, Senior Manager, Portable PA Marketing, JBL Professional. “EON has become the industry standard for portable powered speakers and we are gratified that the TEC judging panel has recognized the EON Series with one of pro audio’s most prestigious honors.”

AKG

Revamped Digital Automatic Microphone Mixers – DMM6 and DMM12

Adding to its family of microphone mixers, AKG introduced its new line of digital automatic microphone mixers – DMM6 and DMM12. With an intuitive user interface, numerous DSP functions and high signal to noise ratio (S/N), the DMM series provides users with the highest quality in automatic mixing technology.

DMM12 offers 12 inputs, while easily adjusting the mic to line level. Its four line outputs (2x stereo) are individually assignable for each input. The stereo record outputs are individually assignable, while the headphone out port allows users to listen to each input and output individually.

DMM6 offers six inputs and two line outputs at 1x stereo.

When in use, all inputs are active, but attenuated to a level that equals the level of one “active microphone.” If two or more inputs receive relevant input signals, their amplification is increased to a level, which allows overall output to equal one “active microphone,” resulting in an absolute feedback-stable system.

Working to deter noise pickup, the DMM series senses numerous sonic activities to monitor and diminish unwanted sound. If a signal is picked up over a long period of time, the mixers understand that it may be an air conditioning unit or other unavoidable noise. When a large number of microphones pick up the same signal and all mics are active, the DMM system will recognize applause and not react. When two microphones are receiving the same signal, the mic with the slightly higher level gets priority, while the other one is attenuated.

“AKG understands the needs of the live sound professional and the updates to our line of rackable mixers underscores our goal of providing high-quality, reliable sound in all performance spaces,” stated Thomas Giczy, Business development Manager, Installed Sound, AKG. “DMM6 and DMM12 embody the technological advancements AKG delivered with its original analog 8-channel auto mixer, AS8 and its digital predecessors DMM4/2/4. DMM12 and 6 will be a tactical addition to any installed sound system to ensure proper sound.”

Latin GRAMMY-winning jazz guitarist and former N.Y. Yankee Bernie Williams performed a set in the NAMM Foundation Lounge.

Holophone

Big O Omnidirectional Mic

Holophone’s Big O omnidirectional mic and C+ cardioid mic join the company’s recently announced Super C supercardioid condenser, forming a trio of ultra high quality, customizable microphones designed for the most critical live, recording, and broadcast applications. As Holophone founder and President Michael Godfrey explains, these new mics are anything but ordinary.

“The microphone market is overrun with boring, unimaginative mics that have nothing new to offer in terms of styling or sonic performance,” says Godfrey. “Simply put, we believe it’s time for something new and completely different, and we’re issuing a wake-up call to the pro audio industry.”

Holophone’s Big O is a full-frequency, 20Hz to 20kHz omnidirectional mic designed to take center stage, with an articulate and natural tone, minimal proximity effect, and a cool, eye-catching look. Available in matched pairs, the Big O is ideal for drum overheads, acoustic guitars, large vocal groups and choirs.

The new Convert 15A arrayable loudspeaker is a powered, multi-function system incorporating a series of breakthrough features that offer an unmatched level of versatility. The Convert 15A features an innovative system which provides user-definable dispersion characteristics, allowing the system to be deployed as either a curved source array or used individually as a point source.

The horizontal and vertical dispersion characteristics of the system can be “converted”, to meet the specific requirements of almost any application. This is achieved using the proprietary Digitally Convertible DispersionTM (DCDTM) preset which modifies the horizontal dispersion of the Convert 15A from 20º to 40º. Vertical dispersion can also be altered using a combination of dispersion panels and digital presets to achieve 60º, 75º asymmetrical or 90º degrees of coverage.

The wide frequency range and impressive output of the Convert 15A is possible thanks to the D.A.S. designed and built transducer components. Low frequency reproduction employs the D.A.S. 15GNR4 loudspeaker, a 15” device incorporating a 102 mm (4”) voice coil and a light-weight neodymium magnet assembly.

The M-60N neodymium compression driver is used to handle high frequency reproduction. The driver’s 44 mm (1.75”) voice coil is made using copper clad aluminum flat wire attached to a urea polyamide diaphragm. Three M-60N units are attached to the new BPS-320 dSERPISTM trifunctional waveguide capable of providing optimum coherency as a horizontal or vertical curved source array or as a point source.

The Convert 15A employs an advanced package of integrated electronics that includes digital signal processing, component and amplifier protection and a new 2000 W, three channel Class D amplifier with switch mode power supply (SMPS).
