How Will Demand for Video Conferencing Evolve in 2015?

Three integrators speculate on how unified communications and video conferencing technologies will expand and improve in the next year.

From time to time, Commercial Integrator poses a “chatter” question to multiple integrators or vendors to gauge different perspectives on one topic. They recently inquired of a few manufacturers a question regarding video conferencing: How will demand for video conferencing evolve in 2015?

Here are their thoughts.

Paul Waadevig, product manager, unified communications, Biamp Systems:

“It will continue to evolve with hard codec deployment declining with the focus on soft codec at the endpoints. Companies that want video conferencing with dedicated bandwidth and hard codec-like features will leverage video conferencing managed services in conjunction with their unified communications platforms or as a stand-alone service.

“Endpoints will focus on how best to present the far-end image while providing far-end devices a better experience as well; incorporating USB 3.0 and HDMI 2.0 connectivity for added functionality and video quality. We’ll also see UC platforms featuring video, subsequently driving demand and overall usage in the enterprise.”

Tim Root, chief technology officer and EVP of new business development, Revolabs:

“In 2015, I expect a continued trend in the transition to more UC rooms being deployed, gravitating toward lower-priced, PC-based solutions. Enterprises are realizing that the technology has matured to the point that they can scale deployments without impacting their networks or support resources, driving a true value proposition.

“The catalyst will be the full integration of single-user applications in conference and huddle room spaces.”

Joe Sarrasin, technology manager, unified collaboration, Crestron:

“2015 and beyond will prove to be a pivotal time in the evolution of VTC. Video conferencing will continue to evolve away from its traditional role as a primarily stand-alone, room-based service toward its new role as a part of the much larger unified collaboration environment.

“As UC users adopt a collaborative work flow that spans from the mobile device to the desktop to the conference room, video will be a key component alongside multi-user document creation and messaging in facilitating new levels of communication.”
