Presentation devices may not be the first thing on a tech manager’s mind.

In fact, according to Logitech, while one billion people are using presentation software yearly, only about two million presentation remotes are sold in the same time frame.

However, 11 million meetings take place every year, where 60 percent of white collar jobs will be regularly presenting, taking up a total of 37 percent of employee time in meeting. When you think of it that way, presentation technology seems more important than it does it a first glance.

Consider this as well: Logitech, the leading manufacturer of presentation remotes, hasn’t released a new remote in over eight years. In the same time frame, Apple released ten different models of the iPhone.

Logitech realized it was time for an upgrade. So the company invited TechDecisions to come check out its new Spotlight presentation remote.

Spotlight has a three button design: the center is the “main” button, the bottom is the “back” button, and the top is the diverse “media” button with multiple features. This media button looks to do away with the disruptive task of going back and forth to a computer during presentations

The Highlight feature allows you to highlight certain areas of the screen. Hold down the media button and the screen will light up with a spotlight that you can drag around and place over different aspects of the screen.

The Magnify feature lets you enhance areas of the presentation. Double click the media button and a spotlight will magnify a portion of the screen. Drag it around and leave it where you like during presentations.

Cursor control is built into the remote, so you can control your desktop to enhance your presentation by bringing up new media. You can control volume by moving the remote up and down to avoid mishaps with volume during videos.

The remote can also act as a timer. Users can set vibration alerts in the remote for, say, a five minute warning, and then again when the presentation time is up.

These features are all controlled through a companion app on the computer. Because of this, you don’t have to worry about pointing at the screen – Spotlight will move around the screen based on your hand movement from where you’re pointing when you start hitting the media button.

Spotlight has a 100-foot range with dual connectivity, USB and Bluetooth. To solve the conundrum of chargeability, the Spotlight allows for three hours of use from one minute of charge.

Carmine Gallo, bestselling author, international keynote speak and advisor to some of the most well-known brands, was able to get a sneak peek at Spotlight prior to the briefing.

“I’ve only been working with this for a few weeks,” says Gallo. “You can see how, once you start getting into the business world, this is the type of device that is a game changer. Let’s say whoever was using the computer recently has the audio too low. I’m able to raise it instantly instead of walking all the way back [to the computer] and pushing the audio button. I can help you focus on one part of the slide.

“If you want to elevate your presentations, if you want to look different and stand out, these are the type of tools that I think will help people get there,” says Gallo. “I thought it was just a new clicker but it’s much, much more than that.”

Spotlight is available at the Logitech Website and at Apple stores starting today, February 1, for 129 dollars. It will be available at many major retailers starting in March. The device comes in gold, silver, and slate, with silver being exclusive to Apple stores.
