Return To ArticleCollier County, joining a growing list of other Southwest Florida entities, became a victim of a phishing scheme late last year that netted foreign attackers $184,000 in taxpayer money, according to investigators.
County funds in December 2018 were the target of what the Federal Bureau of Investigation identifies as a “Business Email Compromise,” county and clerk of court’s office officials said in a joint statement Monday, following an inquiry by the Naples Daily News.
The money was “wire-transferred to a bank account fraudulently represented as belonging to Quality Enterprises USA, Inc., a contractor working for the county,” according to the statement.
