New York Government Agencies Hacked Before COVID-19 Outbreak

About a month before the current coronavirus pandemic threw New York government into overdrive, state officials were dealing with a different, previously unreported emergency, in the form of a massive cyber-attack that disabled some state agency information systems and took nearly a month to resolve.

The attack was believed to have come from outside the U.S. and temporarily halted access to data bases that the State Police, Department of Environmental Conservation and Department of Civil Service use on a regular basis.

State officials stressed that no personal identification of New Yorkers or state employees was compromised. Nor did the attack actually result in the theft or exposure of information from the various data bases.
