The IT Analyst Interview Questions You Should Ask Candidates

These IT Analyst interview questions will help you if you're part of a team preparing to speak with and sort through some candidates.

You’re part of a team of colleagues tasked with hiring the next IT analyst. What types of questions should you ask candidates during interviews?

Naturally, the answer to this question will vary based on the individual. There are always those same solid conversation-starting, breaking-the-ice questions that we assume you already know to ask.

But what specific IT Analyst interview questions are tried-and-true in the industry?

You should always carefully consider the individual and their work/extracurricular history before formulating a full list of questions to ask. But your prep time is limited and today is the day. What should you ask?

We’ve reached out to our IT, CIO, and other contacts to conglomerate a list of IT Analyst interview questions and hope you will find some of them useful in your search for the perfect candidate.

Basic Cloud Computing IT Analyst interview questions

Tell me about the differences between dynamic and static polymorphism and how much experience you have with them both?

How would you account for accrued expenses?

What kind of teacher of new technology would you characterize yourself as? Tell me about a time when you successfully taught a new technology and what was that like?

What is the difference between a primary key and a foreign key?

If you experience an issue you’ve never encountered previously, where do you look first for answers?

Tell me about your experience with programming?

Let’s say your new company has 5 offices and about 1,000 employees. How would you implement a new service?

  • Is the way they would start implementing something congruent with how your executives would? And could they make a good case for their methods if not?

Working with those who are older than you is probably going to be part of your career at some point. Have you ever experienced any issues with this?

  • Let them read between the lines on this one: you want to know if they can clearly communicate and work well with more elderly members of the workforce.

In what ways do you think you made the biggest impact at your last place of employ?

  • This digs deep into your prospective candidate’s ultimate goals and aspirations and how they work to accomplish those.

How have you implemented best practices surrounding data confidentiality at your previous employers?

  • Critical, really, to any employee, but especially one in this capacity.

Where have you struggled when presenting information to high-level management? Where do you shine most?

  • This person will likely be responsible for presenting critical information — it’s important to gain a sense of how well they’ll do.

  • Does Java support multiple inheritance?
  • What is one key skill or quality you think you could bring to this role that other candidates might not have?
  • What are the three key constraints on any project?
