Samsung’s Solve For Tomorrow Education Contest Encourages STEM Learning

Students identify problems in their communities and use STEM knowledge to solve them.

September 4, 2015 TD Staff Leave a Comment

STEM learning is of vital importance to young students. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math are subjects that inspire creativity and innovation. Millions of people are currently working in STEM fields to help solve complex problems. Without these skilled workers, the world would be difficult to improve. Keeping students interested in STEM is crucial to maintaining a world of innovation, creation, and problem-solving.

Samsung is looking to inspire STEM education with the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow education contest. Classrooms that participate in the contest will be challenged to identify issues in their communities and use STEM knowledge to find solutions. Winning schools will be awarded a share of more than $2 million in technology, and will be granted the opportunity to bring their ideas to life.

In 2014 , the Academy at Palumbo in Philadelphia won the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest when its students created an algorithmic mapping system to help students choose the safest route when walking home at night. Other Solve for Tomorrow winners developed solutions such as decreasing water usage in their community, and making adaptive equipment for students with motor skill restrictions.

Through the Solve for Tomorrow contest, students will not only be able to solve problems in their community, but they will also be able to explore different careers in the STEM fields. STEM education gives students the chance to discover, innovate and problem-solve, and helps them understand the impact their skills have on the future of innovation.
