LogMeIn is making changes to its popular password management solution LastPass that will impact users with free accounts beginning next month.
The company’s new restrictions to a free subscription to LastPass will limit users to view and manage passwords on only one type of device, either a mobile device or computer. Currently, users can access it across both computers and mobile devices.
“Starting March 16, 2021, LastPass Free will only include access on unlimited devices of one type,” reads a notice on the company’s support page.
For example, a user with a free version with computers as their active device type can use it on any computer, but won’t be able to use LastPass on a phone, tablet or smart watch unless they upgrade to a Premium or Families account at $3 per month and $4 per month respectively.
Similarly, Free users with mobile devices as their active device type can use it only on mobile devices and can’t use it on a desktop or laptop unless they also upgrade to a paid plan.

For users with free accounts, their first login on or after March 16 will set their active device type. Users will then have three opportunities to switch their active device type.
“Please note that all of your devices sync automatically, so you’ll never lose access to anything stored in your Vault or be locked out of your account due to these changes, regardless of whether you use computers or mobile devices to access LastPass,” the company posted to its support page.
Beginning on May 17, Free users will have basic support, while users of paid versions will get personal support from LastPass, which includes personal customer support via email.
Business plans, meanwhile, start at $3 per user per month.
If you use a single-user account to manage passwords across all your devices, you should take a look at the market, because there are plenty of password managers with differing levels of free and paid accounts.
