Microsoft has launched its new Edge browser today for Windows and, MacOS, iOS and Android systems.
The launch out of preview comes with the company’s release of its first stable channel build more than a year after Microsoft announced its intention to rebuild Edge on the Chromium open source project.
When users install the browser on an up-to-date Windows 10 device, it will replace the previous version and some additional updates may be required. Favorites, passwords and basic settings will all migrate to the new browser automatically, the company said in a blog post.
Those using Edge on iOS or Android will have the browser update atomically.
Users also have the option of installing Microsoft Edge in a future update to Windows 10 following a “measured roll-out approach” for the first few months of 2020. The company will migrate Windows 10 customers to the new Edge in the coming weeks, beginning with some Windows Insiders.
For enterprise and schools, users won’t be automatically updated yet. Organizations can block the automatic delivery to deices on Home and Pro editions with Windows Update enabled by using the Blocker Toolkit.
Once the new Edge is deployed, administrators can configure or restrict updates, but Edge will be built-in to Windows via future updates.
For those who like using Google Chrome, the new Chromium-based Edge is very similar.
The browser syncs your passwords, favorites and settings across all of your devices, privacy controls, productivity features.
Microsoft 365 customers using Microsoft Search to find information on their organization’s intranet “is as easy as typing” in the browser’s address bar, wrote Joe Belfiore, corporate vice president for Windows, in a blog post.
“The last several months have been nothing short of inspiring for all of us working to deliver great new capabilities for Microsoft Edge including AAD support, Internet Explorer mode, 4K streaming, Dolby audio, inking in PDF, Microsoft Search in Bing integration, support for Chrome-based extensions, and more,” Belfiore wrote.
